It's Been Fun

Journal Entry: Sat Feb 11, 2012, 12:04 PM

Isn't it funny, in August, midway through writing a chapter of Gods and Demons, I got bored. I just sorta sat there, inspirationless and tired, thinking of something - anything - to write.

So I opened up a GDoc, and sat for a while. It started simple, a short descriptive piece with a convert, and then it just fell in place. By the time I wrote a part, the next segment trundled into view. Paragraphs grew to pages, then chapters. It was easy, effortless, and most importantly, fun. In this manner, I ended up with three short pieces sitting on this DeviantArt, mostly ignored and unread-  so I decided, having nothing to lose - to post them onto Equestria Daily.

About half a year later, I finally typed the last word. The proof readers and editors having had their fill, and ensured everything was as good as I could make it. Six months of work. One night where I had to tie all loose ends together, and thread it into a wickerwork sculpture.

Did I succeed? Well, that's not my decision, it's that of you guys out there. A lot of people say they don't want success, but that's untrue. A writer writes for one reason...for their work to be read. For someone to take their time out of their day, step into a world they fashion so intimately, and immerse themselves in it. To have someone return out of these worlds, yearning for more and giving nothing but praise, is the feeling the writer loves. And of course, criticism can be like a kid kicking your sandcastle. No matter how much you harden yourself to it, it still cuts you.

And as such, even though I'll never be happy with my finale, I felt it had to be released in the end. Even now, I can look back on Allegrezza, and pick a hundred flaws. Were I willing, I could sit down, take my time, and rectify most of them. But then, I wouldn't have such an excellent bedrock to gauge my future writings from.

Anyway, I'd like to give a massive thanks to everyone who read, commented, drew, composed, wrote, whined, complained and even recorded. I managed to collect together the majority of the artwork the fic has received over time, but there's certainly more out there.

Y'all have a good night now, I'm off to watch Dr Who fighting the Devial.  If you're feeling sad about all this Allegrezza ending business, play this music:

Anyway, have art. Lots of art:

What a sweet, fun, enjoyable story. I am usually not one for romance, in fact, it usually drives me crazy, but I absolutely adored this. Thank you so much for writing this and brightening up my life a little bit more. I think I'm going to be smiling for at least the rest of the month. :D

This. This is one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read, and I don't mean just fanfics, I'm talking published best sellers. Loved those funny little references, and the offhand (or rather offhoof) comments reminded me very much of Douglas Adams. I look forwards to reading more of your work, especially if its so sweetly romantic as this. Write on.

I loved your book, It was undoubtedly the most fun I have had ever reading a book (It was also rather emotional too). I finished the book in no less than two days, although I was secretly wishing that the book didn't have to end. No book could ever touch my heart as much as yours did. I was also wondering, What inspired you to write "Allegrezza"? Also, have you ever though of publishing any books you have written? You certainly have the talent to do so...

I haven't written any books that Hasbro wouldn't sue me for publishing. They threatened me with a C&D when I asked to self-publish Allegrezza.

That said, I'm hoping Fleeing Stars ends up going well. Dunno if it's publishing material, though.

Allegrezza was sorta done chapter-by-chapter on the fly. I had only a vague idea of the progression and ultimate destination of it. You can tell by the pacing of it, tbh.

Not at this point in time, I'm afraid.

There are side stories smattered around this dA profile, though.

I wish that I had the words to tell you how great this piece was. The way you used detailed and largely unknown knowledge to add to the realism of Allegrezza only made it harder for me to put down my phone. I have read many pieces by many esteemed writers, and, in my unprofessional opinion, Allegrezza was the one that best brought me into a whole new world. Coffegrunt, I hope that this simple message will pay off even a small portion of emotion and admiration that I owe you for bringing to life this creation of utter brilliance. Write on, Coffegrunt, and know you made me (and hopefuly many others) a very happy brony.

Hey um, that was great, I'm pretty sure it took more time to write than to read, so I know it's not a fair trade, but I give you my thanks
